the race
What a crucial race this one is for the deciding of World Champion! If Lando Norris, already having the advantage of being on pole, is able to secure the win, he will take back the lead of the WDC. But if Oscar Piastri, our current WDC leader, is able to make it up to at least fourth and finish there, he will hold on to the lead!
It’s lights out and away we go racing in Mexico City! Lando Norris has a great launch off the starting line! He is able to hold onto first while all the other cars behind him head into full-fledged, all-out war with one another! Back in fifth, Max Verstappen swiftly passes George Russell for fourth, but he isn’t content on staying there for even a second! The Dutchman is already attempting to pass the Ferraris, who were practically banging wheels already when Max arrives! Max tries to pass Charles Leclerc but is sent wide and off the track! He takes quite a while to recover his place on the road, and as he’s doing so more drivers are sent wide, including Charles right after Max’s failed overtake attempt! Charles regains himself, but ahead of Lando, which is obviously against the rules, so he quickly gives the place back.
In lap 6, Max seems to feel like he’s spent enough time looking at the back of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, so he decides to break free, or at least try to. In a particularly tricky set of turns, Max makes the move to pass Lewis around the inside, but this results in them touching wheels. After turning yet another corner where Max is now on the outside, Lewis goes wide and Max ventures off into the grass! Max drives back onto the track ahead of Lewis. Max leaves the seven-time world champion in his dirty air with his old teammate, George Russell, to deal with. George’s hopes of passing Lewis are very short lived, because Lewis is already back to fighting with Max! While trying to get ahead of his old rival, Lewis’s brakes lock up and he’s sent driving in the wrong direction! He uses the escape road to recover. With Hamilton dropping in the places, a Mercedes car also goes wide and gives Oliver Bearman a chance to shoot up to third! Hamilton quickly gets his rightful place back in third, but with Oliver in fourth and Max now in fifth, I sense a battle about to take place! The British rookie goes around the outside, and after briefly driving over the gravel, he’s able to successfully leave the reigning world champion in his dirty air! What a drive for Ollie! Lewis Hamilton receives a ten second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
In lap 11, Oscar Piastri makes the move to pass Yuki Tsunoda for 8th. He receives DRS and does so! Oscar to 8th!
In lap 24, Lewis Hamilton pits to change his tires and set his 10 second penalty in motion. Once he pits, he starts dropping grid positions, which sends Oliver Bearman into third! Lewis exits the pit lane in the bottom 10.
In lap 35, Haas driver Esteban Ocon tries to pass Alex Albon for 11th. It’s a tight move but he’s able to get passed the Thai Williams racer! Esteban to 11th.
In lap 38, Max pits. After putting a set of soft tires on, he exits the pit lane in 8th position.
3 laps later, Mercedes tells George that surface temperatures are extremely high and that he needs to get it under control. George responds with ‘unnecessary anger and borderline violence’ “I’ve got a ******* car in my ***, okay? A car much quicker than ours (Oscar Piastri’s McLaren) I’m trying to hold position. I’ve got much more pace than Kimi here, we can fight for a podium. I’m happy to give the position back if I don’t achieve it.” WHOO! Strong words from George, but Mercedes listens to his rant and lets their rookie driver, Kimi Antonelli, know that he is going to swap positions with George! As George goes to take the lead over his teammate, Oscar is close behind waiting to attack, he really is up George’s rear! George is able to swiftly pass Kimi without Oscar interfering.
In lap 47, Max is yet again up against Lewis, but this time a few less penalties and a lot less drama is involved! Max takes the inside line and passes Lewis for P7.
One lap later, the Mercedes of Kimi and the McLaren of Oscar and the Ferrari of Lewis all pit at the exact same time! The cars may have come into the pit lane in a certain order but they can leave in a different one! Oscar has the fastest pit stop of the three and comes out ahead of Kimi! Lewis stays behind. Oscar comes out 7th, P8 for Kimi and P9 for Lewis!
In lap 49, Oliver Bearman and George Russell pit. Mercedes pulls off a 3.2 second stop, but Haas comes through with a 2.3!!! Oliver exits before George, but Max has already snatched up the rookies third place position and dreams of a podium! Max to third!
In lap 60, Oscar is still right behind George, but it’s been too long and the Aussie is sick of looking at the back of the Mercedes! He goes around the inside and passes George for 5th! One more position gained and Oscar will still have the lead over his teammate and rival for the championship, Lando Norris.
2 laps later, George gives 6th back to Kimi, just like he said he would if he wasn’t able to pass the Haas of Oliver Bearman. Bearman still has the lead over both Mercedes so George has to follow through. Kimi to 6th. In the same lap, Gabriel Bortoleto makes a smooth and quick pass around fellow rookie, Isack Hadjar, for 10th.
With 2 laps left to go, now is the time for moves to be made if certain somebodies want to hold onto their championship lead. I’m looking at you Oscar! But before any dramatic overtakes can be made, a yellow flag waves! Carlos Sainz pulls off the road to retire his car! So close to the end, how devastating it must be for him! But many fans speculate he did this on purpose to ensure his old teammate, Charles Leclerc, can hold onto 2nd! Charlos shall live on in our hearts forever! But no Safety Car is deployed yet, so Charles is still at risk of losing his position to Max! Max is practically on top of the Ferrari when a VSC is put into action! The rules state that no one can overtake during a Safety Car or VSC, so if the Grand Prix ends under the watchful gaze of the Virtual Safety Car, our current grid will end as such! But to the surprise of everyone, the VSC ends in lap 71, the final lap of the race! It’s now or never! As Lando takes the win 30 seconds ahead, Charles flies through the last few turns of the track to successfully take second!
Lando Norris wins the Mexico City Grand Prix! With a lead over second place of a little over 30 seconds, Lando takes back the lead of the WDC by 1 point! It may only be one point, but to the Lando fans all around the world it’s so much more! It’s a reminder of how hard Lando has worked since he lost the lead at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix back in April!

What an entertaining race! Mexico never fails to leave everyone jaw dropped! Even though Oscar is not in the lead anymore, we can still appreciate all the effort he’s put in this year! Personally, he never fails to wow me with his driving abilities! One point can change in a millisecond, though. With three races left on the calendar, absolutely anything could happen! I’ll see you in Brazil!!
