the hungarian grand prix: qualifying

Hello everyone and welcome to the beautiful Budapest! This will be the last race before a long and weary 4 weeks off from the sport, so let’s savor it!

q1

With a minute left in Q1, our world championship leader is also leading qualifying! Oscar Piastri’s lap time is 1:15.211. Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso decided it was time to rise out of the ashes like a rookie phoenix and astound fans today! He sits 0.070 seconds behind the lead! Behind him is Oscar’s teammate Lando Norris in third, followed by George Russell in 4th.

Carlos Sainz, Yuki Tsunoda, Oliver Bearman, Pierre Gasly, and Esteban Ocon find themselves in the drop zone. Yuki is the first to complete his lap, he crosses the line and manages to make it out of 17th to a much better position, P8! Him jumping out of the disqualified places sends Alex Albon to 16th and puts Liam Lawson in danger.

As Isack Hadjar skyrockets to P3, his fellow rookie, Gabriel Bortoleto completes his lap and makes 5th place!

Here comes Williams driver Carlos Sainz! After replacing Tsunoda for 17th position, Carlos is hungry to make it to P2! He speeds through the track and secures 7th place, which sends Liam Lawson into the bottom 5.

Next to cross the line is Pierre Gasly. He gets bumped out of his unfortunate place and makes P13, sending his fellow Alpine driver, Franco Colapinto, into 16th. Charles Leclerc is now on the cusp of being disqualified! Hopefully he can pull through and secure a good lap time!

Colapinto bumps up to 11th and sends Charles into P16, but before we can see the Prince of Monaco avenge his place in Q2, his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, will complete his lap. Lewis absolutely flies through his lap and makes P9. Charles is next! He has the fastest first sector of anyone so far, but does that mean a change in positions? Yes it does! He takes his 16th and turns it into a 5th!

Liam Lawson, currently in last place, is next over the line! He secures 14th position, which sends his former VCARB teammate Yuki Tsunoda back into the drop zone.

The drivers eliminated in Q1 are Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull) (16th), Pierre Gasly (Alpine) (17th), Esteban Ocon (Haas) (18th), Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber) (19th), and Alex Albon (Williams) (20th).

Onto Q2!

q2

We pick up with a little more than a minute left on the clock. Lando has set the fastest time with his championship rival and teammate, Oscar, behind him in second, and for the second time today, we see an Aston Martin in the top three! This time, it’s none other than Lance Stroll!

The unlucky five who find themselves in the drop zone are Liam Lawson, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto, Kimi Antonelli, and Franco Colapinto. Liam shoots up to 6th which, shockingly enough, sends the 4-time world champion Max Verstappen into 10th position. What a place to be in for one of the best drivers on the grid!

Here come the Mercedes bros! Both in not so great positions, Kimi Antonelli in 14th and George Russell in 10th, the dynamic duo need to find the rhythm and get their heads in the game! They start their final laps of Q2. Kimi absolutely soars through the twists and turns, but he’s struggling with the grip of his tires against the blacktop. Even despite being all over the road he still manages to cross the line with exceptional speed and makes eighth position, but what does that mean for his teammate who was at risk of being sent to the drop zone? Well, when Kimi got out, in went Russell!! Speaking of the Briton, he is next to complete his lap! George really knows how to clock in a good lap time! He takes his P10 and turns it into a P4! Way to go George!

Max Verstappen, now in P12, is desperately trying to make a comeback. He makes it out of the bottom five but only manages a P8. As everyone groans about Lewis Hamilton not making it into Q3, a new star comes on the scene! Gabriel Bortoleto hops out of 10th and takes fellow rookie Kimi Antonelli’s spot in the final sector of qualifying!

With a clock that reads 0:00, the drivers who are yet to complete their last laps hurry to do so. Franco Colapinto moves out of last place to take 14th and Carlos Sainz replaces him, only for Carlos to complete his lap and give the trophy of last place in Q2 back to the Argentinian! Carlos to 14th.

The drivers eliminated in Q2 are Oliver Bearman (Haas) (11th), Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) (12th), Carlos Sainz (Williams) (13th), Franco Colapinto (Alpine) (14th), and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) (15th) (exceeded track limits).

q3

This is the last chance for the top ten drivers to prove themselves to their teams and to the world! Welcome to Q3.

With 8 minutes and 10 seconds on the clock, Fernando Alonso sets the fastest time so far and takes first! Fernando’s glory doesn’t last very long! Lando Norris completes his lap and takes pole position! Lando’s closest rival for the driver’s championship who also happens to be his teammate comes flying through the track! His mission: take pole away from Lando. And he does so! Oscar Piastri to provisional pole!

Next to come down the straight is George Russell! He slightly loses his grip but regains control and makes 3rd! Since we’re on the topic of rivals, George Russell’s on and off track rival, Max Verstappen, is up next! After a brutal end to Q2 which resulted in an eighth position finish, Max is ready to reclaim his place at the top of the food chain! Today is unfortunately not his day, though. He can only make it to 5th.

Next to set their times are both Aston Martin drivers! What a shock to see them both in Q3! Lance sets a very good time in the green car and takes P3 from George Russell! Fernando loses some rear grip but pulls through and snatches up 2nd! Look at the Aston Martin’s go!

Charles Leclerc has officially set the fastest middle sector of Q3! He crosses the line and takes Pole position! If he can hold onto this, it will be his 27th Pole in his F1 career! This must come as a shock to the McLaren’s who thought they had this Qualifying on lock down! Both Papaya drivers look to set their last lap times and take back the lead to the race tomorrow! Both drivers can’t find a good enough pace to compete with the Ferrari! Lando crosses the line and makes a P3! If Oscar can find his rhythm there is still a chance he could turn his 2nd into a 1st! But he is unable to do so and stays in 2nd! Pole isn’t guaranteed yet! Max is still completing his lap! He is 3 tenths of a second down to Leclerc’s time. The Dutchman will really have to focus and drive like no one’s watching if he wants to make Pole! To the line he goes, and it’s only eighth for Max!

Charles Leclerc takes Pole Position for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix! His first of the season!
